GCRI at the Society for Risk Analysis

The Society for Risk Analysis (SRA) is the leading professional society for almost all types of risk—financial risk is mainly discussed at other societies. SRA brings together researchers from many disciplines as well as professionals from government, industry, nonprofits, and other sectors. SRA has been very welcoming to the global catastrophic risk community, beginning with its participation in the 2008 Oxford Global Catastrophic Risks Conference and continuing with its activities with GCRI. The SRA community has taken naturally to the global catastrophic risk topic via its fundamental appreciation of the importance of low-probability, high-severity risks.

GCRI has close ties to SRA. GCRI co-founders Tony Barrett and Seth Baum first met at the 2010 SRA Annual Meeting during a session chaired by Baum. Both Barrett and Baum have served in leadership roles at SRA: Barrett served as Chair of the SRA Security and Defense Specialty Group during 2016-2017 and Baum served as Chair of the SRA Risk Policy and Law Specialty Group during 2022-2023. Past SRA Presidents John Garrick, Paul Slovic, and Jonathan Wiener have all participated in activities with GCRI. Garrick hosted events on global catastrophic risk at UCLA and served as a GCRI Senior Advisor from 2018 until his death in 2021. GCRI has also published in SRA’s flagship journal Risk Analysis. In many ways, SRA’s approach to global catastrophic risk is shaped by our experience with SRA and the society’s accumulated wisdom about risk analysis.
