GCRI co-founder Tony Barrett has left his position as Director of Research and is now in the position of Senior Advisor. The move comes as Dr. Barrett begins a new role in the US government, which precluded his continuing as Director of Research. Dr. Barrett’s new government role is as a Senior Technical Advisor at the National Risk Management Center of the Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency, part of the United States Department of Homeland Security.
The idea for GCRI began as a conversation between Dr. Barrett and Seth Baum at the 2010 Annual Meeting of the Society for Risk Analysis. The two of them went on to launch GCRI in 2011. Since then, Dr. Barrett has remained active in GCRI, contributing research papers, leading projects, and helping oversee all aspects of the organization. Dr. Barrett’s deep expertise in risk and policy analysis and commitment to high-quality, interdisciplinary research has been instrumental in the development of GCRI’s approach to studying and addressing global catastrophic risk.
Within GCRI, Dr. Barrett will be joining fellow Senior Advisors Gary Ackerman and Seán Ó hÉigeartaigh. Each of them is an experienced leader in global catastrophic risk and related topics, bringing a wealth of research and organizational expertise. Together, they will ensure that GCRI has the guidance needed to advance its work on global catastrophic risk.
We at GCRI wish Dr. Barrett the best in his new role in the US government, and we look forward to continuing working with him in his new capacity as a Senior Advisor.
